When it comes to auto repair, nothing can give you the satisfaction of replacing a part of repairing a part of your vehicle by yourself without having to go to a mechanic. Despite their relative lack of safety and the fact that the potential for any accident is very high, a DIY repair can allow you to quickly repair the vehicle in your garage without having to resort to taking the vehicle to the mechanic and shelling out a couple of hundred bucks and waiting an hour or so to get your vehicle fixed. Besides, if you know how to change a tire, there are definitely some other things that you can do for your vehicle in your own garage.

For people looking to complete a couple of DIY projects on their vehicle, in this blog post, we will look at some of the must-have equipment for DIY auto repairs that not just the DIY enthusiasts or car people should have, but everybody should have them in their garage to help fix up minor issues and problems that might otherwise take up a lot of money and resources. From changing a flat tire to performing other quick and simple fixes on your vehicle, here are some of the must-have equipment for DIY auto repairs that every garage, including yours, should have.

Must-Have Equipment for DIY Repairs

Whether or not you like or are excited by the prospect of taking your tools to the vehicle, putting on some music, and working on your car during the weekends, these tools can always come in handy due to their universal nature, as well as providing you with the requisite tools for quick and simple fixes that your vehicle may require, even if DIY and car mechanicals aren’t your strong suit. Let’s get started with the must-have equipment for DIY repairs.

Click-Torque Wrench

Perhaps one of the most satisfying-sounding tools that you can have in your garage. Wrenches are very useful when it comes to garages and vehicles, and even as a multipurpose tool, it is one of the many tools that should be in all houses, regardless of their propensity to perform vehicular maintenance or not. Click torque wrenches are the same pieces of tool or equipment that you typically see a mechanic working with or holding; as a testament to their usability in vehicle repairs, nearly all mechanical and internal parts of a vehicle and an engine can be accessed using this click-torque wrench. This is what makes them so versatile and a must-have; whether you’re switching out tires or performing a repair within the engine bay, the one tool you should have with you is a click-torque wrench.

Screwdrivers

Whether it is home DIY or vehicle maintenance, screwdrivers are an absolute must-have for people looking to perform even the most simple and basic tasks around the home and in the garage. Need to fix a broken rack? Screwdrivers are your preferred tool of choice. Need to quickly reattach the rearview mirror that may have come off on your car? A screwdriver can fix that; all you need to know is if it’s a flat (shaped like the minus sign) or a Phillips (shaped like a plus). Many newer vehicles and newer appliances come with hybrid screws that can be turned around by both types of screwdrivers, but even beyond the garage and DIY stuff, a house without a screwdriver is simply incomplete. Any small issue with the vehicle or a household appliance can turn into a big bill and a waste of time if you don’t know your way around a screwdriver.

Wrenches

Wrenches of all types, sizes, and usability should be a part of your home. When anything in your home goes wrong, it’s always better to have the requisite tools on you at all times, and wrenches can come in handy when you need to tune the car or tighten a pipe in the backyard, a wrench is always the one tool you can trust to get the job done. Therefore, your home or your garage should always have an assortment of different sizes of wrenches available at all times to ensure that you have the right tool at the right time.

Jack stand, Jack

When it comes to vehicle maintenance, upkeep, and repair, the one thing you need to understand is that a lot of the essentials that aren’t usually reserved for DIY are located on the underside of the vehicle. The oil pan and a lot of the other parts that carmakers know and understand are parts that will only be accessed by mechanics and are located on the underside. As such, safety and common sense demand that you use a jackstand to jack the car up, and put a distance between it and the ground to ensure that you can comfortably and easily access the underside. For that, you will need both jack stands and jacks; the good thing is that these usually come as part of the extra equipment in the vehicle, usually located in the trunk of the vehicle. If, for some reason, you can’t find it or don’t have them, we’d suggest investing in an excellent jack stand and jack that ensures safety above all.

Socket sets

10mm sockets: the bane of any mechanic or car person working on installing a new piece of equipment on their car or engine. Given the usefulness of wrenches in car repair and even in household maintenance work, sockets are part of wrenches (like adjustable wrenches) that provide a whole range of usability and utility to a bunch of different applications. From vehicles to household appliances and equipment, socket sets can come in handy, especially the ones that you can use to tighten or loosen the bolts on a wheel. They are especially useful and not having them in your car can get really difficult when you get a flat while on the road and trying to get somewhere in a hurry.

OBD/ car code reader

Many newer cars and even some older vehicles come with bus or port that is supposed to be your gateway into the engine from a diagnostic standpoint. From hearing weird sounds from the engine, to the dashboard lights making you wonder just what exactly is wrong with the car, this OBD port is supposed to give you a code that tells you what might be wrong with the car exactly. These OBD ports require an OBD code reader or scanner that plugs into the port or bus and tells you which code is showing. You can then use the code and verify it with the owner’s manual of what might be causing the issue. Having an OBD code reader at home can be very useful.
